Discover the charm of Cologne
your guide to unforgettable European adventures. Explore my tips and tricks for Cologne, Germany, and make the most of your visit to this historic city. This was my first ever solo trip to another country in January so the council was taking down the Christmas markets however it did look pretty big so it might be worth a visit.

Cologne in a day: must-see highlights
If you only have one day in Cologne, make sure to visit the magnificent UNESCO-listed Cologne Cathedral, a true architectural marvel. It is currently free to enter but check before going as they are planning to introduce payment for maintenance costs.
Afterwards, take a romantic stroll across the Hohenzollern Bridge, adorned with thousands of 'love locks'.The walkway is also right next to where the trams and trains run along so you can hear and feel the wheels going across the bridge.
Located across the bridge opposite the cathedral there is the KolnTriangle. It is an observation deck at 100metres high. Tickets are 5 Euros for an adult and has some nice view of city, cathedral and bridge from high up.
Don't miss exploring the charming old town- it was destroyed during world war 2 but then rebuilt.
indulge your sweet tooth at the famous Chocolate Museum for a delightful experience. The main chocolate making area overlooks the river Rhine. But it is also a great way of grabbing some chocolate treats but it can get extremely busy during weekends. Tickets are 19 Euros for an adult but I feel it is worth it.

Culinary delights of Cologne
Cologne is famous for its unique local beer, Kölsch. This light, top-fermented beer is traditionally served in slender 0.2-litre glasses called Stangen. You'll find it served fresh in almost any brewery or traditional pub in the city.
I went to the Hard rock Café and was sat next to George Michael's guitar. As it was my first time going solo I wanted to have a trusted brand which I knew always serve great food. It is also great to throw yourself into the deep end to shake off the anxiety of eating alone at a restaurant.

Uncover Cologne's hidden gems
Beyond the typical tourist attractions, Cologne holds some fascinating secrets. Did you know the original Eau de Cologne originated here? You can visit the House of 4711, the birthplace of this iconic fragrance, and even experience a scent workshop.
For football enthusiasts, a visit to the RheinEnergieStadion, home to 1. FC Köln, offers a unique atmosphere that's quite different from a typical "bowl" stadium. It's a great experience even if you're not a die-hard fan. Check to see if Koln are playing at home as the atmosphere looks insane inside.

Essential travel tips for Cologne
One crucial tip for your trip to Cologne is to remember to buy a travel ticket for public transport. I was once checked on my way to the football stadium, and luckily I had purchased a valid ticket, making the process simple. Public transport in Cologne is efficient, but inspectors do conduct checks, so always ensure you have a validated ticket to avoid fines and ensure a smooth journey around the city. Consider a day pass if you plan on using public transport frequently.
